Assignments Due

I have site reports, ethnographies, some journals, some digitals and some lessons. I believe I have all site reports. I may be missing a couple of ethnographies. I do have journals from 7/16 participants. I also have digitals from three participants. I have three lessons. My intern is in hysterics often as she reads the journals and ethnographies. There is a lot of writing talent in our group.

By September 20 I must have all site reports, ethnographies and journals ready for the editing process. On October 5 you will be able to check to make sure your work is done and ready to move for the final editing/production phase. On the digitals there is some negotiation. Some of you did slides etc. My goal is to have a comprehensive and representative collection of the field study that will go on the Department website. Some have submitted more than 24 digitals which is fine. If you have 15 great digitals or 35 please get them to me with the appropriate documentation as described in the 8/20 guidelines.

I know the lessons may be tentative at this point because you will need to actually use them with a class to obtain the student work. However, I do need to have your lesson so we can discuss, if necessary, any changes that might be considered prior to employing the lesson in the classroom I know some of you have called and indicated that you are working on the above. The good news is that most of the work is done -- site reports, ethnographies and journals/digitals (you just have to select, right?)

More good news is that the work that has been submitted is excellent. In fact, it is fantastic! Collectively there are great resources for all of us and others to use.

Some of you have been setting up presentation sessions. Please let me know any needs that you may have. In some cases I may even be able to assist. I am putting together an introductory powerpoint that can be used to introduce the project.

See you on October 5. Directions to MLC, Bloomfield will be sent later.

Letter for Your Superiors

I will prepare a letter for you indicating your very successful participation in the China Fulbright. Protocol requires me to write the letter to your principal and then copy you and your superintendent. Only the Commissioner can directly send a letter to your superintendent unless I get some kind of special permission.

Please provide me with the full name, address etc. of your principal and superintendent. Personnel can change and I don't want to send the letter to someone who has departed.

Check out your scholar colleagues in the news!

"Fulbright scholarship sends city man to China" screams the headline in the Bristol Press on August 20, 2002. Our own Joel Hinrichs is featured. It is a great article. Go to google search engine, type in Bristol Press, then do a search with word "China." It was front page!

Another article titled, "Welcome to China, A.J. LaPlant," is featured in the Lakeville Journal on August 15, 2002. A.J. analyzes the Chinese economy. To find the article go to google search engine, type in Lakeville Journal, then click on Falls Village.

These are great articles! Let me know when you appear in print. These articles will be incorporated into the final report.

Naming and Submission of Digitals

I am sure many of you are anxious to deliver your digitals prior to the beginning of school so here are the specifications for delivery.

Name your digital: Your Initials, Description and Original Code. Example: DWGGreatWall133-1344_IMG.JPG

If they are already on a CD, use the above reference (133-1344_IMG.JPG or whatever you have) for the name of your digital in a word program. That way I can download and rename them for you.

Either way please provide the following in narrative form for each digital: Date, location, and brief description.

Do not drop your digitals into a word document. All I need is the photo digital file.

Deliver digitals on a CD. The descriptions can be in a separate word file on a disk or CD. Do not send photo digitals electronically. They take up too much memory!

If you have digitals on a CD and need to select and download, you can use the computer in my office and get everything done at once! Give me a call and we can set up a time.
